Historical Significance
Built in the 1870s as a docks pub, The Waterloo Hotel & Bistro occupies a Grade 2 listed Victorian building. This former dockers' pub once boasted the longest terracotta bar ever built, with 200 pints of beer and 200 glasses of whisky waiting on the bar for thirsty dock workers. Original features such as stained glass windows, ornate staircases, and the bar's period ceramic tiles remain preserved throughout the property.
Rooms & Suites
Tastefully decorated en suite bedrooms retain original Victorian features while including underfloor heating in bathrooms. The Tower rooms offer charming four poster beds, and some rooms provide views of the iconic Transporter Bridge across the road. Extra thoughtful touches like ear buds and complimentary biscuits are provided in each room.
Business & Events
A fully equipped conference room accommodates up to 40 people, making it suitable for business meetings and conferences. The hotel offers personalized menu planning services for special events held on site. Free WiFi is available throughout the building, and reception staff can arrange taxi bookings for local transport.
Parking & Accessibility
Free private parking is available at the rear of the hotel, with the car park locked nightly from 9:30pm to 5:30am for added security. The hotel is situated in Newport's regeneration area, only 20 minutes from Cardiff city centre and close to major road and rail connections. A lift provides access to upper floors, and the building includes facilities for disabled guests.
Location & Nearby Attractions
The hotel is located across the road from the historic Transporter Bridge, a landmark worth visiting. Newport city centre is a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride away, and Cardiff Millennium Stadium is reachable in about 20 minutes by car. Belle Vue Park and other South Wales attractions are easily accessible from the hotel.
Highlights
History: 1870s docks pub with longest terracotta bar ever built
Rooms: Four poster beds in The Tower rooms
Business: Conference room for 40 with personalized menu planning

Location: 20 minutes from Cardiff, opposite Transporter Bridge
“This building has real character, and it's evident the owners are invested in retaining its period features, a definite plus. Guests consistently find the rooms surprisingly spacious and comfortable, particularly the beds, for the price point. The staff's genuine helpfulness and willingness to go the extra mile stand out, making it a solid choice for value.”
